West Ham United will welcome defending Premier League champions Manchester City to London Stadium for the opening match of their 2022/23 season.
The Irons played out an enthralling 2-2 draw with Pep Guardiola’s eventual title winners in the equivalent 2021/22 fixture in May, Jarrod Bowen’s clinical first-half brace eventually cancelled out in the second half before Łukasz Fabiański crucially kept out Riyad Mahrez’s late spot-kick.
Our most recent league win at home to the Citizens came in the 2014/15 season, although we did get the better of City at home in the Carabao Cup fourth round last October, eliminating them on penalties after a 0-0 draw – in turn becoming the first team to knock Guardiola’s team out of that particular competition in five years.
Elsewhere on the opening weekend, the season kicks off as a whole on Friday 5 August with a London derby, which pits Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at Selhurst Park.
On the Saturday, last season’s runners-up Liverpool travel to runaway Championship winners Fulham for the early 12.30pm kick-off, with fellow new sides AFC Bournemouth hosting Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest – in their first Premier League game since 1998/99 – journeying to Newcastle United.
Frank Lampard and Everton will host Chelsea at Goodison Park in the late 5.30pm kick-off, whilst Tottenham Hotspur also start their season at home, welcoming Southampton.
In Saturday’s other fixtures, Leeds United and Leicester City host Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford respectively.
Then, on Sunday, prior to our opener against Manchester City, Manchester United will get new manager Erik ten Hag’s reign underway with a home fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford.
