Boreham Wood v West Ham United - All You Need To Know

Boreham Wood v West Ham United
Pre-season Match, Meadow Park, Tuesday 12 July 2022, 7pm BST

When & Where etc…

As in each of the previous two years, West Ham United will contest a pre-season double-header on Tuesday evening, with David Moyes splitting his squad in half.

One half will travel to Meadow Park to face National League side Boreham Wood and the other will head up the A12 to take on EFL League One club Ipswich Town. Kick-off in both matches will be at 7pm.

Meadow Park has hosted the Hammers previously, with Sam Allardyce's squad beating Boreham Wood 3-0 in July 2013, with current first-team coach Kevin Nolan among the goalscorers.

Since then, West Ham's Women have visited Meadow Park regularly in the FA Women's Super League, as the 4,500-capacity stadium is also home to Arsenal Women.

Boreham Wood enjoyed a standout 2021/22 season under manager Luke Garrard, finishing ninth in the National League and, even more impressively, reaching the FA Cup fifth round.

The Hammers kicked-off their 2022/23 campaign with a 2-0 win at Swiss Super League side Servette on Friday evening, when Academy prospects Aji Alese and Divin Mubama were on the scoresheet.

This game will be the one of seven to be played in the build-up to the start of the new campaign, which begins with the visit of Premier League champions Manchester City to London Stadium on Sunday 7 August.

Travel…

To get to Meadow Park from east London or Essex, the easiest way is to take the M25 westbound around the north section from Essex into Hertfordshire. If you are using a sat nav, the postcode is WD6 5AL.

Leave the M25 at Junction 23 and take the A1 towards London. Then leave the A1 at the first exit and take the A5135 towards Boreham Wood. Follow the A5135 towards the city centre, go straight over the first small roundabout and at the next large roundabout take the second exit onto Brook Road (signposted 'Boreham Wood Football Club'). Then take the next right onto Broughinge Road and the entrance is on the right. Park in the Brook Road pay car park.

If you are taking the train from central London, the nearest station is Elstree & Boreham Wood, which is on the Thameslink line from St Pancras to Luton and Bedford. Services run regularly before and after the game. From the station, it's less than a mile's walk, or you can take the 292 bus.

Opposition…

As mentioned in the introduction, Boreham Wood enjoyed a standout 2021/22 season under manager Luke Garrad, finishing ninth in the National League and, even more impressively, reaching the FA Cup fifth round.

Formed in 1948, Boreham Wood FC began life in the Mid-Herts League before joining the Parthenon League, Spartan League and, in the mid-1960s, the Athenian League. In 1974, the club switched to the Isthmian League, where they spent the next 30 years before being transferred to the Southern League, then back to the Isthmian League!.

Boreham Wood reached the FA Trophy semi-finals in 2006, before being promoted via the Play-Offs to Conference South in 2010, then promotion again via the Play-Offs to the National League in 2015.

In 2018, the Hertfordshire side went within 90 minutes of reaching the Football League for the first time, only to lose to Tranmere Rovers in the Play-Off final at Wembley, despite their opponents being reduced to ten men inside 60 seconds.

After finishing ninth in the Premier League last season, The Wood will hope to finally become one of the 92 at the end of the upcoming campaign.

Previous Meetings…

Meadow Park has hosted the Hammers previously, with Sam Allardyce's West Ham United beating Conference South side Boreham Wood 3-0 in July 2013, with current first-team coach Kevin Nolan among the goalscorers.
