Dagny Brynjarsdóttir has called on West Ham United Women to put their full focus into finishing the season as strongly as possible.
The Hammers fell to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea on Wednesday night in the Barclays Women's Super League. The visitors took the lead after thirteen minutes through Niamh Charles, before goals from Pernille Harder, Sophie Ingle and Erin Cuthbert in the second half.
West Ham now will now switch attention to their final two matches of the Barclays Women’s Super League season and captain Brynjarsdóttir suggested that the side could have played better at both ends of the pitch against a very strong Chelsea side.
“As we all know Chelsea are a really strong side,” Brynjarsdóttir reflected. “We came out with the aim of staying compact and we didn’t want to give them too much space. We gave them an easy goal but other than that I think we played quite well in the first half.
“They exploited us a bit more in the second half and we gave some cheap goals away. We conceded from a corner which was disappointing but I also think that we could’ve been better in possession. They have quality players in every position and they deserved to win the match today.”
After a difficult period without a victory Brynjarsdóttir admitted the team are going through a tough spell, but also suggested that the squad are working hard to change their fortunes.
She continued: “It’s difficult when you haven’t been able to win and it has been tough mentally for all of us. We play football because we want to win and that’s not been happening recently.
"We just need to believe in ourselves, we need to be confident and we need to stick together. As a team we are good so we need to now try to get that win together.”
The Hammers face the two sides directly below them in their final two WSL outings of the season, with Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur up next.
It presents the Irons with an opportunity to finish the season strongly and Brynjarsdóttir is determined to do just that.
“We did well in the first part of the season but we second half hasn’t been as good. Momentum hasn’t really been with us. We really need a win and we have an important match against Leicester at the weekend so we want to win that.
“We haven’t won a match since before Christmas so we are working hard to pick up three points. We have two games left this season and those two games represent two opportunities to get that win. We will go away and analyse today’s game and what we need to do better as well as what we did well, and then we’ll go again.”
