Dagný Brynjarsdóttir celebrates against Chelsea

Dagný Brynjarsdóttir: Our start to the game wasn’t good enough

Dagný Brynjarsdóttir has been in good goalscoring form for West Ham United of late.

The Icelandic midfielder notched her sixth goal of the campaign against Chelsea in a 4-1 defeat at the Chigwell Construction Stadium on Thursday evening.

It was the Hammers’ first home Barclays FA Women’s Super League defeat of the season, and their only other defeat at home in all competitions also came against the Champions in the Continental Tyres League Cup back in January.

And Brynjarsdóttir said that her team certainly improved in the second half against the Blues, but that they weren’t at their best in the first 45 minutes.

“I don’t think we played our best in the first half,” Brynjarsdóttir told Sky Sports at the full-time whistle.

“Chelsea are great at defending their goal so it’s quite hard when you’re 3-0 down at half-time to get back into the game. But I thought we came out in the second half and were much better – there’s even an argument to say that we were the better team on the field during those 45 minutes.

“But like I said, it’s difficult to come back from three goals down, and unfortunately, they added another in the second half.

“It’s disappointing that we haven’t been able to take anything from the game, but I think that’s because our start to the game wasn’t good enough."

The 30-year-old scored the winner against Reading in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals at the end of February, and was also on the scoresheet against Sheffield United in the previous round.

And the midfielder has heaped praise on the staff and players at the club for the environment that they have been able to create that is benefiting everyone.

“I would say I’m in good form, I just think the environment that we have here is very professional, and everyone here pushes each other to become better every day. Our team spirit is really good and I think, collectively, we’re moving forward together.

“It's something we’ve really been working hard on with Jenny (Coe), who is Head of Performance and Well-being at the Club. We know that if we’re closer as a group then we’re going to be better on the field, so hopefully we can continue with that moving forward."

Thursday evening was the first home match that West Ham United Women have had since the FA eased Covid-19 restrictions on fan interactions with players. Brynjarsdóttir got to interact with her fellow Hammers for the first time since arriving at the club in January 2021.

“I think it’s pretty cool that we can go over to them now and thank them for attending and signing for us. When I came here a year ago, there weren’t even fans in the stadium.

“Unfortunately, my son isn’t here tonight, but I haven’t been able to have a post game picture with him because of the restrictions, so I’m really looking forward to that when we have a game at an earlier time,” she smiled.

West Ham United will now travel to Birmingham City on Sunday, but are back at home on Wednesday 16 March when they face Manchester United at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.
