On This Day: Noble on the spot to down Liverpool

A young Mark Noble showed his mettle to see off Liverpool at the Boleyn Ground on this day in 2008.

West Ham United and the Reds were deadlocked at 0-0 going into added-time, when Jamie Carragher was judged to have upended Freddie Ljungberg inside the penalty area.

A hush descended over the famous old stadium, but the 20-year-old midfielder held his nerve to beat Pepe Reina from 12 yards and shoot West Ham to a valuable victory.

The win kept Alan Curbishley's side tenth in the table and that is where they would remain virtually unchanged until the season's end.

Rafael Benítez's Liverpool recovered from the defeat to finish fourth, albeit eleven points behind champions Manchester United.
