Derby County v West Ham United - All You Need To Know

Derby County v West Ham United
Emirates FA Cup fourth round, Pride Park Stadium, Monday 30 January 2023, 7.45pm

West Ham United's quest to lift the FA Cup for the fourth time in the Club's history continues in the East Midlands on Monday evening.

Then, David Moyes' side will take on EFL League One opponents Derby County in a fourth-round tie at Pride Park Stadium.

The Hammers reached this stage with a 1-0 victory at Premier League rivals Brentford, while Derby have defeated Torquay United, Newport County and Barnsley.

Monday's meeting will be the first between the clubs since they were both in the EFL Championship in 2011/12, and just the second in the FA Cup's long history, with West Ham defeating Derby 5-2 in a semi-final at Stamford Bridge 100 years ago in March 1923.

A century on and Derby are now playing in the third tier, having suffered on and off the pitch in recent seasons, but a summer takeover and the purchase of Pride Park Stadium by local businessman and Derby supporter David Clowes in the summer of 2022 put the club back on a firm footing.

Former Rotherham United manager Paul Warne was appointed in September and, since then, the Rams have put together a consistent run of results that have propelled them into the League One Play-Off places and saw them push Liverpool to a penalty shootout in the EFL Cup third round.

West Ham will need to be on their game to beat a Derby team unbeaten in 19 matches and on a six-game winning run in all competitions, and it is therefore no surprise that the tie has been selected for live coverage by ITV.

Opposition...

Founded in 1884 as an offshoot of Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Derby County FC first entered the FA Cup in September that year, losing 7-0 at Walsall Town in their inaugural competitive match.

The following season, Derby defeated Aston Villa 2-0 in the FA Cup and in 1888 they became one of 12 founder members of the Football League and defeated Bolton Wanderers 6-3 in their first fixture.

Derby moved to their Baseball Ground stadium in 1895 and reached three FA Cup finals in five years between 1898-1903, but lost all three. The Rams lifted the FA Cup at the fourth attempt in 1946, when they defeated Charlton Athletic 4-1 after extra-time at Wembley.

The club's golden era was under the managerial duo of Brian Clough and Peter Taylor between 1967-73, when Derby won the Second Division title in 1969, then the First Division title in 1972 and reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1973.

After winning the First Division for a second time and defeating West Ham United to lift the FA Charity Shield under the management of Dave Mackay in 1975, a period of decline followed as Derby were relegated to the third tier in 1984.

Successive promotions got Derby back to the big time and, after two more relegations, they went up to the Premier League in 1992, and remained in the top-flight for six seasons.

Another ill-fated Premier League campaign in 2007/08 saw the Rams win just one game and collect just eleven points. The club then spent 14 seasons in the Championship, during which they twice reached the Play-Off final and lost.

Financial issues saw Derby deducted 21 points last season and, despite the best efforts of manager Wayne Rooney, they were relegated to League One in May.

Previous Meetings

West Ham United and Derby County have met on 78 previous occasions, including two War League fixtures played in November 1945, which were both won by the Rams.

Of the 76 'official' first-team matches between the two clubs, West Ham have won 27, Derby have won 24 and 25 have been drawn.

The two have met just once previously in the FA Cup, with the Hammers scoring a 5-2 victory over the Rams in a semi-final played at Stamford Bridge in March 1923. Both clubs were in the Second Division at the time.

West Ham have twice beaten Derby 5-0 - in a League Cup third-round tie at the Boleyn Ground in November 1988, when both were in the First Division, and in a Premier League fixture at Pride Park Stadium in November 2007.

Derby's best result against West Ham was a 6-0 First Division win at the Baseball Ground in December 1928.

Match Officials

Referee: Thomas Bramall
Assistant Referees: Derek Eaton & Steven Meredith
Fourth Official: Andrew Madley

Monday's referee Thomas Bramall is the same official who took charge of West Ham United's EFL Cup third-round defeat by Blackburn Rovers at London Stadium in November.

Prior to that, Bramall had never taken charge of a West Ham first-team fixture, but had officiated three Hammers U21s matches in seasons gone by, two at Stoke City and one at Manchester United.

The Sheffield-based referee has taken charge of five Premier League matches this season, as well as nine in the EFL Championship, two in the Emirates FA Cup and four in the EFL Cup, including West Ham's penalty shootout defeat by Blackburn.
