Flynn Downes is enjoying life in east London.
The 23-year-old joined his Club in the summer and, having impressed in the UEFA Europa Conference League against FCSB and RSC Anderlecht, made his full Premier League debut at Anfield on October 19.
Downes’ first league start in front of a home crowd came on Monday in a 2-0 win over AFC Bournemouth. Six days later, a trip to Manchester United is now in his, and West Ham United’s sights.
For a boyhood Hammer, a match at Old Trafford evokes one particular memory. Downes was just seven when Carlos Tevez netted a memorable winner on 13 May 2007 – a goal that stands at the top of the ‘Great Escape’ billing and up there with any moment in Claret & Blue history.
“It was a special game,” he enthused. “That's the one that stands out [in meetings between Manchester United and West Ham United].
"I must have been about seven or eight. I wish I was there!”
Until Manuel Lanzini repeated the feat in a 1-0 Carabao Cup win at Old Trafford last season, Tevez's heroics were the last time the Irons had travelled to Manchester United and left with a victory.
Of course, a tough challenge awaits then for David Moyes’ men on Sunday, although the No12 is ready to make his mark as West Ham look for a third straight win in all competitions.
The Irons head north in good spirits and, having won six consecutive matches at London Stadium, Moyes' outfit are looking to take that form to the road.
“At the minute we are flying, we have got a lot of momentum,” Downes added. “The mood in the camp is very good. The boys and all the staff are buzzing.
"But we have got to keep it going. We are a good team. Obviously, the Premier League is very tough, but we back ourselves against anyone.
“I can’t wait to play there. Anfield the other day was quite surreal, so I am sure Old Trafford won’t disappoint."
If the Irons are to repeat Tevez and company's heroics of 2007, West Ham will need the support of the 3,000-strong Claret and Blue Army, who will not doubt provide plenty of encouraging noise at Old Trafford.
“The travelling support has been unbelievable,” he stated. “On Sunday, I think it will be even better. We really appreciate the support because Old Trafford is a tough place to go, so we need all the fans with us!”
