Hasegawa: I'm pleased that we were able to win against Charlton

We’ve become accustomed to seeing Yui Hasegawa score quality goals, and her winner against Charlton Athletic on Sunday afternoon fell into that category.

The Japanese international took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half with the Irons a goal down after Heidi Logan converted with ten minutes gone.

The midfielder first connected with a cross from Kirsty Smith, poking the ball beyond Sian Rogers, who had been impressive all afternoon in the Addicks goal.

Her second was a thing of beauty, an expertly taken free-kick that cleared the wall and nestled in the top corner, giving West Ham United a well-deserved victory at The Oakwood.

Hasegawa reflected on the match and how pre-season has gone so far for the Hammers.

“First of all, I’m pleased that we were able to win the game," she told whufc.com at the full-time whistle.

“I didn’t think that we played a very good game, we didn’t keep the ball as well as we know that we can do. We have to try and be better with possession.

“We’ve had a good month of pre-season now, and we need to continue improving as we get closer to the beginning of the season.”

Hasegawa has been in fine goalscoring form throughout this pre-season and now has five to her name after the double against the Addicks.

A superb piece of skills that saw her spin away from two players against Billericay got her off the mark, before a screamer against Enfield Town followed.

The midfielder notched two goals in her debut season in the Barclays Women’s Super League last term and is hoping to add more to that tally this time around.

“I enjoy pre-season to be honest, practise has been good, and I’ve scored some good goals. I like playing in lots of matches, so pre-season is always nice for me.

“I like working with Konch (Paul Konchesky), he has a good tactical understanding and I trust him to do the best for the team. I’ve enjoyed this pre-season so far and I’m looking forward to what the season holds.

“I practise my free-kicks a lot during training, so it’s good to have one go in again! I want to score more goals this season and hopefully I will be able to do so.”
