Konchesky: We were very disappointing against Liverpool

Paul Konchesky called West Ham United Women’s 5-0 defeat to Liverpool embarrassing – after they concluded their pre-season camp at Loughborough University with a heavy loss.

Liverpool were ruthless in their attacking play, with goals from with goals Katie Stengel, Shanice van de Sanden and a hattrick from former West Ham United Leanne Kiernan giving them a deserved victory at the University Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The boss reflected on a poor showing from his team and said that there’s plenty of work to be done before the 2022/23 Barclays Women’s Super League season gets underway.

We’re very disappointed, I would go as far as saying we are embarrassed.

I certainly am and I know that my coaching team are as well.

There were four goals in there where we as a team can stop them from happening. Let’s take the penalty out of the equation, which I don’t personally think was a penalty.

If you’re defending and you’re marking in the box then you mark, you don’t leave the space there for players to run into to score.

If was too easy for Liverpool to find the space in which to create opportunities, and that basic was what was missing today.

The season is getting closer and we played against a team that’s going to be in our league this season. At this stage we’re trying to continue to build up to the levels that we will need for the opening game against Chelsea.

Obviously we still have three weeks to go, but you don’t expect to lose so heavily to a team that you will be competing against in the domestic season.

The trip here concluded with this game and we’re disappointed to end it in this way

The facilities here have been fantastic for us this weekend, we had a great training pitch and plenty of other facilities for the girls to use during their free time.

There’s been some team bonding and other fun bits and pieces, but if I’m honest, the main reason for being here was for this game and obviously we’ve not performed to the level that we wanted to today.

You don’t want a defeat like this to come during the season, so this gives us time to rectify what has gone wrong. We have a few weeks now to make sure we get things right ready for the opening game against Chelsea.
