The Opposition…

Manchester United started the 2022/23 Barclays Women’s Super League season in scintillating and devastating fashion.

Like West Ham United, Marc Skinner’s side recorded three points and a clean sheet on opening day. They strolled to a 4-0 victory over Reading at Leigh Sports Village. Defender Maya Le Tissier hit a brace on her debut after joining from Brighton. Katie Zelem and Alessia Russo were also on the scoresheet. Three points were clinically secured by four goals inside 35 minutes.

Le Tissier

The manner of Manchester United’s win over Reading shows that Skinner’s side could be a club to watch out for this season. Importantly, the former teacher managed to keep hold of the core of their squad this summer. Mary Earps, Ella Toone and Russo, as well as skipper and set-piece maestro Zelem, were all retained, although there were some departures, most notably Jackie Groenen, who joined Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day.

After a third consecutive fourth-place finish in 2021/22, there is no doubt that adding Le Tissier, Spain forward Lucia Garcia, Nikita Parris, and former Hammer Adriana Leon into the mix could push United forward. That is the goal for Skinner and company this time around - to find that top-three finish that has narrowly eluded them in the last three WSL seasons.
