Pablo Fornals celebrates scoring at Aston Villa

West Ham United's 1,000 Premier League games by the numbers

West Ham United have become the ninth side to play 1,000 games in the Premier League.

The Claret and Blue Army reached the landmark at Villa Park on Sunday 28 August – a match they won 1-0 thanks to Pablo Fornals' deflected winner.

The Hammers join the list alongside: Manchester United (1,156 games), Arsenal (1,156), Chelsea (1,156), Liverpool (1,156), Tottenham Hotspur (1,156), Everton (1,156), Aston Villa (1,041) and Newcastle United (1,037).

David Moyes’ men have reached the landmark before defending champions Manchester City, who are 35 games short of the 1,000th game landmark.

Of West Ham United’s 1,000 Premier League matches 336 have been wins, 411 have been losses and 253 have been draws.

West Ham have kept 260 sheets under goalkeepers such as Luděk Mikloško, Robert Green, David James and Shaka Hislop.

The Irons have played in 26 of the 30 Premier League seasons – missing only the 1992/93, 2003/04, 2004/05 and 2011/12 campaigns.

The Claret and Blue Army have remained in the Premier League ever since our most recent promotion from the Championship thanks to a 2-1 win over Blackpool in the Play-Off final at Wembley Stadium in 2012.

Our best Premier League finish came in 1999/2000

Our best final placing came in 1998/99 when we finished fifth in the Premier League. With Harry Redknapp in the dugout, the Hammers won 16 matches in the league season – a feat only surpassed in the 20-team Premier League era in 2020/21 under David Moyes and one also equalled in 2021/22, also under the tenure of the Scot, and in 2015/16 under Slaven Bilic.

Our most points (65) came in 2020/21 under Moyes, who guided the Hammers to sixth spot and a place in the UEFA Europa League group stage – a competition West Ham would reach the semi-finals in a year later.

Over that period, the club’s record Premier League goalscorer Michail Antonio has netted 56 goals.

The Hammers No9 moved ahead of Paolo Di Canio and Mark Noble (47) when he netted a brace against Leicester City at London Stadium in 2021.

Mark Noble is joint-second on the list of West Ham’s top Premier League goalscorers  – an incredible 25 of those were from the spot, and only Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have struck more penalties in the Premier League than Noble.

The Canning Town-born midfielder is followed by Carlton Cole (41) and Trevor Sinclair (37), who complete the list of Hammers top-five Premier League goal scorers of all time.

Unsurprisingly, Noble is also the player to have played the most of our 1,000 Premier League matches. Before retiring at the end of 2021/22 season, he made 414 Premier League appearances in Claret and Blue across his 17 years at the club.

Vice-captain Aaron Cresswell (259) is next on the list of top Premier League appearances. He is followed by Carlton Cole (216), Steve Potts (204) and Michail Antonio (199), who make up the rest of the top-five.

West Ham’s first Premier League match came in the 1993/94 campaign, although it ended in a 2-0 defeat to Wimbledon.

John Fashanu and Lawrie Sanchez both struck past Mikloško as West Ham were beaten in front of 20,369 at the Boleyn Ground.

The Hammers first win of the Premier League era would come in the fourth game of the 1993/94 season, with Sheffield Wednesday beaten 2-0 thanks to a Clive Allen brace.

Under manager Billy Bonds, the Hammers finished 13th in their first Premier League season, with Trevor Morley finishing as top goalscorer with 13 goals in his 42 appearances.
